Exercise of the Week: Lat pulldown with resistance bands

August 21, 2009

Starting Position
Stand with legs about hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, abs engaged, and spine neutral. Hold the resistance band so that the tubing is taut when your hands are about shoulder-width apart. Raise your arms above your head, hands above shoulders, elbows slightly bent, palms facing forward.

EXHALE: Pull your hands down to shoulder-height as you simultaneously widen your hand grip (pulling the resistance band outward). The movement should come from your upper back. INHALE: Bring your hands closer together, extending your arms back overhead to the starting position to complete one rep. Aim for 1-3 sets of 10-15 reps.

Special Instructions
Adjust the position of your hands on the band to change your resistance level. When starting with your hands closer to the center of the band, you’ll work against more resistance, therefore adding intensity. When starting with your hands closer to the ends/handles of the band, you’ll have less resistance and an easier intensity level. Focus on using your back muscles as you pull the band down and out.

Recipe Idea: Quick, Easy Southwestern Quesadilla

August 20, 2009

from Bernadette’s cookbook.

This is a great lunch, snack or quick dinner.  I came up with this recipe because I’m always looking for ways to make Mexican food a little healthier but still delicious.

You will need:

Wheat or Corn tortillas (two per quesadilla usually one quesadilla per person.  unless, your husband eats like mine and you’ll need more)

one can/package Corn

one can Black Beans

Exercise of the Week: Plie Squats with Baby Carrier

August 13, 2009

Starting Position
Stand with feet wider than shoulders, knees slightly bent, toes turned outward. Make sure your knees and toes are pointing in the same direction. Engage your abs and keep your torso tall.

INHALE: Squat straight down until thighs are nearly parallel to the floor. Make sure your knees are not reaching past your toes. EXHALE: Squeeze glutes as you straighten legs to starting position to complete one rep. Aim for 1-3 sets of 10-15 repetitions.

Special Instructions
Safety should be your main concern, for you and the baby. Make sure that baby is totally secure in all movements. If any exercise is uncomfortable or too strenuous with baby, try it without baby first.
